Ricciardello quicker and on pole
Going even faster than he did in yesterday's first of two qualifying sessions, West Australia's Tony Ricciardello has taken pole position for race one of the final round of the Australian Sports Sedan Championship in 2001.
His Shell-backed Chev-powered Alfa Romeo, eclipsed four tenths off his initial stunning time with a time of 1 min 10.1295, which was four tenths of a second than his nearest rival and almost a second and a half better than the previous best Sports Sedan qualifying time.
The battle to occupy the outside of the front row became a fascinating scrap between Kerry Baily (Nissan/Chev) and Darren Hossack (Saab/Chev) with the former looking to have secured second before Hossack pulled out a 1 min 5989 second time right as the session concluded.
Baily, who is the only top runner, competing on old tyres is confident that equality will be restored as the new runners lose their edge. Competitors have to nominate one set of tyres to do all qualifying and both races.
Fourth on the grid will by rookie Daniel Jameson in his Jaguar/Chev while Luke Youlden (Mazda RX7) and Dean Randle (Saab/Chev) share row three. Mick Monterosso (Escort/Chev), Terry Shiel (Mazda/Nissan), Phil Crompton (Ford Falcon) and Mark Stinson (Calibra/Chev) completes the top ten but Stinson is already a withdrawal following a broken gearbox in the first qualifying session.
By taking pole Riccardello edges one point closer to the title, requiring only requiring eight points (from a possible 40) to secure it.
