Sam Michael joins Australian racing safety board
Former McLaren sporting director Sam Michael will be part of a revamped Australian Institute for Motor Sport Safety board.
Michael, who returned to Australia in 2014 after a long stint in Europe, will join the AIMSS board after the departure of Chairman Bob Glindemann and director Allan Moffat.
The appointment signals a return to motorsport for Michael, who started in Formula 1 with Lotus and Jordan before moving right up to the technical director role at Williams. He then moved over to McLaren, before returning to Australia for family reasons.
Michael isn’t the only new face on the AIMSS board; former Rally Australia boss Garry Connelly has been named the new Chairman, while mechanical engineer Dr Michael Myers and health researcher Dr Michelle Gatton will also take director roles.
They will join the current directors, motorsport safety expert De Michael Henderson, CAMS President Andrew Papadopoulos, and former V8 Supercars driver Mark Larkham.
“The addition of Michelle Gatton, Mike Myers and Sam Michael means that with the continuing members, our board is now equipped to deliver very positive outcomes for Australian, and indeed, global motorsport participants,” said Connelly.
