Some Like it Hot: Bernd Maylander Takes First Victory in Simmering Heat

Germany's Bernd Maylander secured his first victory of the season at the ninth round of the Porsche Pirelli SuperCup on the Hungaro-ring. Starting from third, Maylander out-sprinted pole-setter Oliver Mathai, who had already been overtaken by Porsche stalwart Altfrid Heger. In lap two, Maylander outbraked Heger as well to secure the lead. Taking up the race from sixth, reigning champion Patrick Huisman (NL) finished fifth, securing enough points to reatain the series lead. Out of concern for the drivers' safety, the race director in conjunction with the Porsche AG makes cup manager, Uwe Bettel, decided to shorten the race from the original 16 lap distance to 12, after problems developed with the Pirelli tyres due to a compound problem.

Bernd Maylander (D, winner): "Our team was perfectly prepared, and I tanked up plenty of sleep over the weekend. I made a blitz start and managed to outbrake Altfrid when he slightly veered off the ideal line approaching the first corner after the finish straight."

Altfrid Heger (D, second): "I made one mistake in this race but that was one mistake too much. Bernd was simply better today. In lap seven I tried to attack again, but I discovered it wasn't healthy for the car and tyres. Moreover, I had to keep my eye on Oliver who applied the pressure from behind."

Oliver Mathai (D, third): "My start wasn't bad but I experienced a little too much wheel spin. By the time I reached the first corner Altfrid was next to me and I couldn't hold him off."
