RRDC MEMBERS WIN 2010 ALMS, GRAND-AM, INDYCAR AND SCCA CHAMPIONSHIPS
HILLIARD, Ohio (Oct. 15, 2010) - Road Racing Drivers Club (RRDC) members completed a hugely successful auto-racing season in 2010, topping the standings in all of the major United States' road-racing championship series.
"The caliber of talent among all the members of the RRDC was clearly evident this 2010 racing season," said RRDC president Bobby Rahal. "We are proud of all their accomplishments, and we wish them continuing success in 2011."
In the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), Duncan Dayton's Highcroft Racing team won the LMP-1 Team Championship, while David Brabham took the Drivers' Championship. In the GT class, Bobby Rahal's BMW Rahal Letterman Racing team, led by drivers and RRDC members Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand, won the Manufacturer's Championship for BMW and the Team Championship, while Porsche ace Patrick Long garnered the GT Drivers' Championship.
In the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, Scott Pruett captured his third Daytona Prototype Drivers' Championship while fellow RRDC members Jon Fogarty, Alex Gurney, David Donohue and Darren Law all finished in the top 10.
In the IZOD IndyCar Series, RRDC members claimed seven of the top 10 positions in the final standings, led by Series Champion Dario Franchitti. Trailing Franchitti were Scott Dixon, Ryan Briscoe, Tony Kanaan, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti, and Dan Wheldon.
In the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Championship, Randy Pobst earned the GT-class Drivers' Championship and Peter Cunningham the GTS-class title.
At the 2010 SCCA National Championship Runoffs, James Goughary snared his fourth SCCA National Championship, winning in the GT-2 class, while Jim Dentici was second in the GTL class and Tom Schweitz was second in FB. In addition, RRDC Vice President and Treasurer John Fergus came home in third in S-2000, trailing his son Corey in second.
An Honorable Mention and congratulations also go to erstwhile NASCAR "road-racing-specialist" Boris Said for his NASCAR Nationwide Series race victory at Montreal.
About the RRDC: The Road Racing Drivers Club was formed in 1952 as a way to give champion drivers a say in their sport, particularly in the areas of safety, and has evolved to serve the future of road racing by mentoring new drivers on both amateur and professional levels. The Club's membership includes leading industry professionals, race officials and motorsports journalists, in addition to prominent racing names.
President Bobby Rahal is the 1986 Indy 500 winner and is co-owner, with David Letterman, of the 2004 Indianapolis 500 winning Rahal Letterman Racing team. Six-time SCCA National champion John Fergus is the Club's Vice President/Treasurer, and five-time SCCA National champion Tom Davey is the Secretary.
In addition to RRDC members lending their expertise to up-and-coming drivers, the Club presents three annual awards: the Phil Hill Award for rendering outstanding service to road racing; the Mark Donohue Award for personal spirit and performance at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs; and the Bob Akin Award -- the top award presented to amateur and semi-professional racers - for speed with style, passion, sportsmanship and contribution to motorsports.
The RRDC also supports the Team USA Scholarship, which has been assisting young Americans in the early stages of their careers since 1990.
Membership in the RRDC is by invitation only. Additional information on the organization may be found at www.rrdc.org .
