Mark Fish Motorsport's Rick Pearson will be aiming to overhaul David Davies and Mat Jackson to secure fourth place in the overall Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup driver standings at Silverstone this weekend.
Pearson currently lies in sixth position, just two points behind Davies, and seven points clear of seventh placed man, David Gibson. With Davies' withdrawal from the series, Stancombe's Mat Jackson is Pearson's main rival in the overall honours list. Though Jackson has a ten point advantage going into the final round, Pearson can take the position with a top three finish.
The Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup last raced at Silverstone at the beginning of June. Then, Pearson battled his way from seventh on the grid to an impressive fifth at the flag. His main challenger throughout the twelve lap race was David Davies. Although Davies started ahead of Pearson on the grid, he was overhauled by the ActiveShop Clio in fine style and relegated to sixth position.
Since then, the thirty-year-old Fulham ace has established himself as a championship front runner with a stunning maiden victory at Brands Hatch two weeks ago and a spate of top ten finishes. The most relevant statistic though, concerns the inaugural Clio Cup night race, held at Snetterton two months ago.
Pearson demonstrated his supreme car control at the Norfolk track and claimed his first series pole and podium position in the dark. The Silverstone night race promises to be another closely-fought affair, though the Mark Fish charge will be hoping to end his season on a high.
"The last race at Silverstone was a lot of fun," he says. "I had a big battle with David Davies and took fifth. Silverstone is a great circuit and one that I am capable of going well at. The Mark Fish, ActiveShop Clio has performed really well in recent rounds and I enjoy the challenge of night racing, so it should be a good race. "
The final round of the 2000 Elf Renaultsport UK Cup takes place at Silverstone this weekend (16 September).
