Super Tourers to Appear at Portland International
April 15, 1996
Portland, Oregon - In an announcement made today at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, the North American Touring Car Championship and Global Events Group made public their plans to stage two rounds of the Super Touring Championship during the 1996 Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 presented by Havoline.
On hand for the announcement, Dominic Dobson, lead driver for Pac West Touring Car Group's Dodge Stratus team commented, "We're excited about running here in front of the Portland fans. This has always been a fantastic event. This is a very challenging track and I feel my experience in an IndyCar here will help us run competitively with the Dodge Stratus."
Michael Nealy, President, Global Events Group, the organizer for the Rose Festival event added, "Super Touring racing has really taken the world by storm. This exciting formula has a broad appeal from hard core racing fans to the family who only occasionally attend a major racing event. We're delighted to add the North American Touring Car Championship to our event."
During his comments to the attendees, NATCC President Roger Elliot said, "Adding a premium event such as Portland to the Championship schedule is a real boost for the program. Personally, Portland has always been one of my favorite events and I'm sure the teams and drivers in the Championship will feel the same way. On behalf of the Championship I want to thank Mike Nealy and Bill Hildick for working so closely with us and allowing us the opportunity to be part of this event."
The final 1996 NATCC schedule is as follows: Lime Rock May 25 - 27 Detroit June 7 - 9 Portland June 21 - 23 Toronto July 12 - 14 Trois Rivieres Aug 2 - 4 Mid Ohio Aug 9 - 11 Vancouver Aug 30 - Sept 1 Laguna Seca Sept 6 - 8
