Controversial penalty thwarts Long's Monza runaway in Porsche Supercup

MONZA, Italy American Patrick was in the midst of a runaway victory in the Porsche Michelin Supercup race at Monza on Sunday when he was assessed a controversial stop-and-go penalty for an chicane "kerb" infraction. The penalty dropped Long to the back of the field, where he aggressively worked his way back to ninth position by race end.

Racing in front of a huge F1 crowd on hand for Italian Grand Prix, Long started the race from second on the grid and slipped into the lead at the first chicane. With a clear track ahead, Long set sail, opening a lead of three seconds.

Halfway through the race, however, officials ruled Long had earlier negotiated one of Monza's infamous chicanes a bit too aggressively and called in the UPS Porsche Junior Team driver for a stop-and-go penalty.

Long returned to the track dead last, but fought back to ninth, within sight of the leaders despite losing several racing laps due to safety car periods. During his pursuit, Long posted the fastest lap of the race, 1:55.184 more than second quicker than the next fastest lap.

"It was a disappointing result after such a great beginning," Long said. "I was on pace all weekend, practice and qualifying and was easily pulling away when the penalty came. Being out front of the Italian fans was awesome! It was exciting and a shame I didn't end up on the podium."

Long also races for the Porsche factory as a member of the UPS Porsche Junior team in the German Carrera Cup, where he is currently seventh in the championship, including a dominant win from pole position at the Norisring circuit. His next German Carrera Cup race will be at Zandvoort in the Netherlands on September 21st. ###
