Sub record stunner ensures pole.

A sizzling second qualifying time of 1:06.9928, has ensured Tony Ricciardello will start the first heat of the third round of the Reward Insurance Australian Sports Sedan Championship from pole position. It was a record-shattering lap for the West Australian based Chev-powered Alfa, and half a second faster than his nearest rival.

Championship leader Darren Hossack didn't improve on his first qualifying session time which came before a off-road excursion into a sand trap aboard the Saab/Chev. He held his second spot on the grid as too third placed Kerry Baily in Nissan/Chev overcoming early alternator problems.

New Zealander Andrew Fawcett showed he had learnt much after first visit to Oran Park for round two around six weeks ago. His Transam-spec Jaguar XKR significantly quicker than the last visit, taking fourth grid position.

The sleek Holden Calibra/Chev of Mark Stinson improved with its second outing, claiming fifth position on the grid while eighth placed Dean Randle was the only other to go quicker in session two and make the top ten. Meanwhile Des Wall (sixth), Tony Wilson (ninth) and Jeff Barnes (tenth) complete the top ten.

Terry Shiel would have taken seventh spot on the grid, but boost problems in his Nisson turbo powered Mazda RX7 caused continual head gasket failures and the team has withdrawn. Daniel Jameson qualified well back in the Jaguar/Chev after alternator and fuel problems. Mark Duggan's Holden Calibra/Chev returned for qualifying after crashing heavily on Friday.
