Ever watch races on TV and wonder, especially when the in-car cameras are on, what it would be like to run hard and fast on a race track? Ever want to find out how exciting it is to drive on a race course as fast as you and your car capabilities allow? Ever want to run your car as hard as you dare without worrying about oncoming traffic, speed limits or unknown obstacles hidden from your line of sight?
Well, here's your chance. The Shelby-Mustang Club of Rochester is holding its 9th annual Open Track Event at Watkins Glen International Raceway in scenic Watkins Glen, New York on Monday, August 18, 1997.
This event, in addition to having vintage and late model Mustangs, Shelbys, Cobras and many other Ford vehicles at the track, is open to ALL MAKES and models, vintage or late model, street or competition. Friends and family are encouraged to attend.
Do you have a safe car? (street or closed wheel competition) Do you have a DOT approved helmet? Do you have the desire to drive on a closed race course at any speed? Do you want to discover your own and your cars limits in a safe place? Do you have the desire to learn about driving skills and proper techniques? Then step up to the challenge and sign up for one of the most exciting and rewarding ways to enjoy your car...on a race track.
The SMCR Open Track Event creates a well controlled environment that allows people with varying degrees of experience to test thier driving skills and thier cars capabilities on a closed race course with experienced SCCA instructors. This is not a competition style event and no lap times will be calculated for you. This event is designed to give drivers of all experience levels run time on one of the world's more challenging and prestigeous race courses while educating the drivers on race course basics such as smooth driving techniques, corning and braking points, and running the correct line. Classroom and in-car instruction is mandatory for unexperienced drivers and is available throughout the day for drivers of all experience levels. All vehicles will undergo a basic technical inspection.
Typically, run groups consisting of similarly experienced drivers get two morning and two afternoon run sessions on both the long course and the short "NASCAR" course.
SCCA instructors, the garage and paddock areas, emergency crews and full track facilities will be available for the day. A buffet breakfast and lunch as well as a comemorative event T-shirt in included in the early registration donation fee.
We are currently filling garage spaces for early entries and instructors. The early registration donation for this years event is $140 U.S..
Instructors fees are waived in leu of instructional services. Instructors, in addition to running thier cars in the expert run group, have the track to themselves for the last 20-40 minutes of the day's event.
