HIPPIES GOES TO THE NURBURGRING 14th July 1998 CHEQUERED FLAG UPDATE
BEETLE MAKES IT TO THE FINISH!
After an action filled 24 hours of trials and tribulations, the VW Beetle team has made it to the chequered flag in the famous Nurburgring 24 Hours in Germany.
Driven by Ross Palmer, Peter McKay, Melinda Price and Damien White, the Australian quartet made it to the finish line after recovering from an overnight crash and persistent turbo problems which hampered the cars progress.
After by-passing the turbo inter cooler, the Beetle enjoyed a trouble free run to the finish line - running strongly for the final six hours of the classic German event.
With team owner Ross Palmer at the wheel, the Hippies sponsored Beetle crossed the finish line at 4.00pm German time on Sunday afternoon - 24 hours after the race commenced the previous day.
For Palmer, the effort to simply get the car to the finish was a victory in itself.
"I am very proud of my entire team," Palmer said.
"We have all been through a lot - not only during the 24 hour event itself - but simply the challenge to get the car on to the grid this weekend.
"It really has been an amazing performance from everyone behind the scenes. Things looked pretty grim on a number of occasions but the effort from mechanics was fantastic.
"The crowd support we received all weekend really inspired us to keep working away in the face of adversity. I really am thrilled with the result."
Palmer climbed back aboard the car with a just over an hour to go and battled tricky conditions to bring the Beetle home.
"With the circuit being so long, the track can be dry in some parts and wet in others," Palmer said.
"You really have to keep on the ball, or you can be caught out very badly in the slippery conditions. I was pretty to happy to finally see the chequered flag."
