HIPPIES GOES TO THE NURBURGRING 14th July 1998 EIGHTEEN HOUR UPDATE

DETERMINED YOUNG GUNS FIGHTING ON

Nurburgring 24 Hour rookies Damien White and Melinda Price are battling on – the Hippies VW Beetle now overcoming turbo problems and charging towards the finish.

Turbo dramas have hindered the cars' progress following it's overnight crash, but White and Price and now undertaking one hour stints as the race enters its final quarter.

"It's taken a bit of time to get on top of, but we're hopeful the turbo problems are behind us now," Female racer Melinda Price said.

"Damien is now in the car and its pouring with rain. The conditions are a bit tricky but it's a lot of fun.

"The circuit is just fantastic and the reception we are getting from the fans is just amazing.

"Every time we pass groups of spectators they are cheering, waving flags and beeping their horn - it's a bit like being Peter Brock at Bathurst, but we're not actually winning."

Sharing the car with Ross Palmer and Peter McKay, the young Nurburgring rookies are adapting well to the testing 20km circuit.

"The traffic is not as bad as I thought it would be with 150 cars," Melinda said.

"With the way the weather is, everyone has their headlights on, so you get a bit of warning before the faster cars are coming through.

"The whole event has been a bit a roller coaster ride. We've experienced the most exciting highs and depressing lows that I'll think we'll all burst into tears when we get to the finish."
