HIPPIES GOES TO THE NURBURGRING 14th July 1998 TWELVE HOUR UPDATE

BATTERED BEETLE BACK ON TRACK

The legendary Australian fighting spirit has come to the fore at the Nurburgring 24 Hours with the Hippies sponsored VW Beetle back on track after its overnight crash.

The car spent one hour being repaired before Peter McKay climbed back aboard the car to complete one final lap before handing over to Melinda Price.

However, the car lost a turbo hose and stopped on the circuit half way through the lap.

The car was returned to the pits and repaired only for the problem to reappear at the next attempt to complete McKay's stint.

Under the event rules, the driver on board the car when it stops on the circuit must complete one more lap once the car is back on track.

With the problem now solved, the Hippies team is now pressing ahead to try to complete the race.

"It has been a tough fight but we are ready to get back out there and give it our best shot," Team co-ordinator Damien White said.

"Melinda and I tossed a coin to see who would be next in the car, but we are both really looking forward to getting in some race miles.

"There are lots of very tired bodies laying around the garage at the moment but I haven't been able to sleep.

"I am sure the adrenaline will keep me wide awake when I get my turn at the wheel."

The half way point, the race was being led by the factory BMW Diesel team headed by Hans Stuck.
