World Touring Car Champion Frank Biela took advantage of sunny weather conditions at Kyalami last week to get in some pre-season testing with the Dunlop tyres he will be required to run on the Audi A4 this year.

With local Audi drivers Terry Moss and Chris Aberdein using the time to fully acquaint themselves with the cars they will campaign in the 1996 AA Fleetcare Super Touring series, the three managed several hundred laps of the track before reversing roles slightly on the final day.

For this season the South African series will make use of Michelin as the series control tyre and Biela turned his expertise to helping the two local drivers test car setups on the Michelins.

Ford Motorsport, now with former race and rally ace Geoff Mortimer at the helm, appear unlikely to field a car for the opening few rounds of the AA Fleetcare Super Touring Championship.

At the end of last season the Mondeos driven by Sarel van der Merwe and Steve Wyndham were returned to the UK. With a new car due only in time for the British season, Ford in South Africa will have to wait until then to get a new car.

Two completely new Toyota Camrys are being prepared locally by Toyota for Julian Bailey and Anthony Taylor for the opening round of the AA Fleetcare Super Touring Championship at Kyalami on March 09. Sources at Toyota say the new cars are radical departures from the ones raced last year with expectations the new Camrys should be able to challenge the Audis and Opel Vectras from the opening round.
