Night before Indy 500 offers plenty of racing action

Before the 98th Indianapolis 500 gets underway, there's plenty of other racing events to help a fan get their fill before the 'main event.'

Tracy Hines

Two race tracks in the Indianapolis metro area offer great action before the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

The Indianapolis Speedrome is one of those venues. Offering a $12 adult ticket and many classes of racing, the Speedrome has a classic Saturday night short track lineup and a newly repaved surface to add to the 1/5th mile track’s character.

The night before the 500, the Speedrome has Jr. Faskarts, Jr. Hornets, Super Karts, Roadrunners, Hornets, and a Late Model Figure 8 race that lasts for 125 laps.

The Jr. faskart feature was 15 laps and was won by Kimmie Greig over Garrett Fox. The Jr. Hornet feature race was 15 laps and was won by Quentin White over Elijah Brothers after a spirited side-by-side battle midway through the race.

The 20 lap Super Kart feature was won by Dustin Tares over Jason Reynolds and the 20 lap Roadrunner feature race was won by Ricky Martin over Brian Canter after a great lunge by Martin going into turn three underneath Canter and Vic Boicourt, who led for most of the race before lapped traffic held him up with a few laps to go.

The 20 lap Hornet feature was won by Junior Lemasters over Robert Eversole while the Late Model Figure 8 race was won by Mark Tunny over Ronnie Basham III.

At Lucas Oil Raceway, formerly known as Indianapolis Raceway Park, USAC Midgets were in action along with the first two rungs on the Mazda Road to Indy. USF2000 and Pro Mazda were racing.

The USF2000 race started with Florian Latorre leading Austin Cindric to the green flag in the 75 lap or 30 minute race. Series points leader RC Enerson started 11th of 21 cars.

Latorre led the first 24 laps before Aaron Telitz took over the lead after starting 6th. Telitz would go on to lead the rest of the way and win over Austin Cindric and Victor Franzoni. Latorre would finish 6th while Enerson ended up 16th.

The 90 lap or 45 minute Pro Mazda race started with Garrett Grist on pole over series points leader Spencer Pigot. Row two had Shelby Blackstock over Anders Krohn. Series points leader Spencer Pigot started 4th in the 13 car field.

The start was aborted, and after a lap under yellow, the race went green. Grist led from start to finish as he won over Grand Prix of Indianapolis race winner Scott Hargrove, who ended up being the biggest mover coming from 6th place to finish second. Third place went to Spencer Pigot.

The 50 lap USAC Midget race started with Tracy Hines leading the field to the green flag over Kody Swanson. Kyle O’Gara got the jump at the start and led early in the race, but after 3 laps in the lead, O’Gara fell to Hines and Hines led the last 47 laps to win. Swanson fell to finish in 7th place.
