RATTRAY WINS MX2 CATEGORY AT DUTCH MOTOCROSS GRAND PRIX
South African star Tyla Rattray got his 2008 campaign off to the best possible start when he won the MX2 category at the opening event of the season, the Dutch Grand Prix at Valkenswaard, over the weekend.
Rattray, on the Red Bull KTM, was in dominant form and won both heats ahead of Italian rider Antonio Cairoli on a Yamaha. In the opening race Rattray romped away with matters to finish 15 seconds ahead of the Italian.
Third place went to British rider Tommy Searle on another KTM. The top five was completed by Dutch rider Erik Eggens (Suzuki) and Briton Shaun Simpson on a KTM.
The second race was a lot closer with Rattray having to work hard for the win. Only 1,2 seconds separated the South African and Cairoli at the flag.
Eggens was third with Portuguese rider Rui Goncalves (KTM) fourth. The top five were rounded out by Searle.
For two other South Africans it was not a day to remember. Wyatt Avis (LS Motors/Vangani Honda) finished 18th in the opening heat and 24th in the second moto. Teenager Shannon Terreblanche (Beursfoon Suzuki) picked up two 21st places.
A fourth South African in Gareth Swanepoel (Molsom Kawasaki) missed the event through injury. Swanepoel is to undergo surgery for a nagging wrist injury.
On the MX1 front Belgian rider Ken de Dycker, on a Suzuki, also got off to a flyer. De Dycker won both heats and in the first moto led home Max Nagl, of Germany, on a KTM, and Belgian star Steve Ramon on a Suzuki.
In the second moto de Dycker came in ahead of Briton Billy McKenzie, on a Honda, and Spanish rider Jonathan Barragan on a KTM.
