AUSTRALIA DOES WELL AT 2006 TRIAL DES NATIONS

Australia has finished second in the Trophy des Nations at the 2006 Trial des Nations in Breals Montfort, France.

The Australian team of Michael Byrne, Trevor Campbell, Dylan Rees and Colin Zarczynski put in a solid performance to end up 30 points behind eventual winners Ireland.

After finishing the first lap of the Trial in second place with a nine-point advantage over Belgium, the Aussies extended that gap through the second lap to end up 13-points clear of third.

The team was right in touch with the Irish through 12 sections of the first lap, however some heavy penalties on four of the final seven sections kept the Aussies out of reach.

They did manage to better their score on the second lap by two points, which was important in ensuring that they held the Belgian team off and finish 11th overall at the event.

The result mirrors Australia's finish at last year's Trial des Nations, when the same team came second in Group B - just managing to edge out the third and fourth placed teams in a tight encounter.

The result is just one spot off an all-time best which came in 1998 - finishing 10th overall and fourth in Group B.

In the 2006 Trial des Nations World Championship, Spain justified their pre-event favouritism by winning their third trophy in a row, with Great Britain coming second, and Japan finishing in third.
