Grand Prix of Mosport 2August 4-5-6, 2000
Montreal, August 2, 2000 - The two races held at the Grand Prix Player's of Trois-Rivieres were - as expected - very hotly disputed and provided the huge crowd with the most intense, breathtaking action. Oakville, Ontario's Matt White, the drivers of the Young Drivers of Canada - Van Diemen, won the two races and vaulted to third place in the point standings with three races to go.
The two drivers who led the standings prior to Trois-Rivières, 18-year old Jonathan Macri (Mopal Construction - Aero 2) and reigning series' champion Didier Schraenen (UAP NAPA/Radio Energie - CMV) both retired twice. With White winning both races and the two leaders suffering from two DNFs, the portrait of the season has changed dramatically. Macri is still on top of the standings, thanks to three consecutive victories, but is now hotly pursued by five drivers.
Lorraine, Quebec's Frederick Martel finished twice in second place in Trois-Rivieres and is now second on the points table. Martel, who had switched teams just before Trois-Rivieres, is still searching the sponsorship he needs to finish the 2000 season. His excellent drives of the past weekend will provide him with the arguments he needed. Matt White has had a difficult start to the season, being involved in accidents, penalties, and suffering from mechanical problems. All of this was solved this past weekend with White scoring two clean victories. He is now lying in third place in the provisional standings.
Veteran racer Robert Boyer is fifth in the standings, having charged hard in Trois-Rivieres - a circuit he knows extremely well. Gerry Kavanaugh, the driver of the IMAX - Van Diemen - was a surprise in Trois-Rivieres, finishing the second race in third place. The rookie driver is learning quickly and has demonstrated that he can match the pace of the leaders. He will be one to watch for on the twisty, grueling road course of Mosport International Raceway this weekend, as the series features round 6 out of 8.
All these drivers know that this Mosport race may be the key to the championship. Stay tuned...
