Round 1 of the Canadian Formula Ford Championship presented by Deringer
Mosport International Raceway, May 20, 2001 -- Oakville, Ontario's Matt White scored an impressive victory in Round 1 of the 2001 Canadian Formula Ford Championship presented by Deringer. White started from pole position and led from flag to flag on the newly renovated Mosport road course today.
White started the weekend on a strong note, clinching the pole position with a fast time of 1:29.585 in his autogodeal.com-sponsored Vector. White took the great start and immediately pulled away from the rest of the field. However, action raged behind White. Edouard Aube, in his Britain West Van Diemen led a train of five cars. Aube held on to second place until he made a small mistake on lap 12, dropping him back to fifth. He recovered well and finished the race in third place. Josh Schreiber, the 18 year old American rookie from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, drove a solid race to finish second.
White crossed the line first on lap 15, finishing 9 seconds ahead of Schreiber and Aube. American rookie Andy Braumbaugh pulled a fantastic move on Gerry Kavanaugh to secure fourth place. Rookie Jesse Mason finished sixth ahead of Didier Schraenen and Louis-Philippe Dumoulin who battled fiercely all race long.
WINNER -- MATT WHITE (youngdrivers.com-Vector) " It feels fantastic ! I never drove such a good car. I was just a perfect weekend. It started with pole position and I drove hard during the race and never looked back. "
SECOND PLACE -- JOSH SCHREIBER (Aero 2) "It was great. Everything was completely new to me. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. It was a clean race -- it was hard driving but it was clean. I am really impressed with the quality of driving in this series."
THIRD PLACE -- EDOUARD AUBE (Britain West-Van Diemen) "It was a difficult race. The car was pushing really hard in Corner 5B which leads to the long straightaway. I was quicker in Corner 1 but I was losing a great deal of time in Corner 5. I put all four tires on the grass once and four cars passed me. But I'm really happy with my performance today."
