Taws on podium in first pro race.

Toronto, Ontario, (May 18, 2002): In a history-making race today, Ashley Taws became the first woman to stand on the podium at a Canadian Formula Ford Championship race. Competing in her first pro race, Taws drove her "Be Anything With Barbie at Wal-Mart" car superbly to finish third in a hard-fought contest this afternoon at Mosport International Raceway, near Bowmanville, Ontario.

The eighteen-year-old Newmarket, Ontario, resident was on a fast pace throughout the weekend, setting competitive times in practice sessions before qualifying third yesterday. Today's race was exciting from the outset, and Taws ran as high as third and as low as fifth in the opening laps before settling into third for the duration. She mounted a challenge for second late in the race, but admitted she lost the opportunity when she made a mistake.

Initially surprised by the aggressive racing at the pro level, Taws quickly adapted and proved she'd be no pushover. Dicing wheel to wheel at speeds up to 230 km/h, it was quite apparent that the rookie was enjoying the feisty competition much to the delight of race fans, her team and herself.

"AIM Autosport gave me a great set up on the car, so I was very confident with the handling," she said. "I'm really happy to have finished in the top three in my first race at this level. It's a great way to start the season."

With a very successful first outing under her belt, Taws is now looking forward to the next race which takes her to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, June 7-9.
