Taws qualifies third for season opener.
Toronto, Ontario, (May 17, 2002): Ashley Taws will start third in the opening round of the 2002 Canadian Formula Ford Championship tomorrow at Mosport International Raceway near Bowmanville, Ontario. The eighteen-year-old racer from Newmarket, Ontario, guided her pink "Be Anything With Barbie at Wal-Mart" car around the 3.967-km (2.459 miles) road course in 1m 30.874s, roaring around the famous track at an average speed of nearly 157 km/h.
Taws looked very comfortable in her car, fielded by AIM Autosport of Woodbridge, Ontario, and reported she was very happy with the car's performance.
"The car feels really good," Taws said. "The AIM crew know the set up needed for this track, and the 'Be Anything With Barbie at Wal-Mart' car is very nice to drive. We've done a bit of testing so the team knows how I like the car. They did a great job."
While qualifying third in a very competitive eighteen-car field is a terrific accomplishment, Ashley's biggest challenge of the weekend is likely to come at the start of tomorrow's race. Having done rolling starts throughout her karting years and the past two seasons in Formula 1200, Ashley must now learn to do a standing start. Her engineer, Keith Willis, has provided some tips and encouragement, but she hasn't even practiced a standing start and tomorrow, in one of the crucial moments of the race, she will have to get it right.
"Keith told me it's easy," Taws said. "I guess I'll find out tomorrow. It's important to get a good start because the competition is very tough and if I loose places at the start, it's going to be really hard to fight back. I've got a good starting spot and I want to get a podium finish in the race."
Tomorrow's race is scheduled to begin at 2:40pm.
