FIA African Rally Championship contender Moses Matovu, who co-drives for former National Champion Emmanuel Katto, was left reeling in shock after the tragic death of close friend, and rallying rival, Riyaz Kurji during the recent Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally.

Moses, who currently lies second overall in the 2009 African Rally Championship co-drivers standings, was lying fourth overall and third in the championship standings when the recent Pearl of Africa Rally was called to a halt early after Riyaz, who was leading the event, was killed when his Subaru left the road at high speed.

Riyaz was a good friend of mine and it is such a shock that he has gone from us. In 2005 I was involved as his team manager and he was always so helpful and full of laughter towards his competitors. He loved rallying and at least he died doing something he enjoyed.

Moses and Emmanuel will next be in action on the fourth round of the African Rally Championship, the Zambian International Rally, which takes place over the weekend of 3-5 July. The pairing will again contest the event in their Tommi Makinen run Subaru Impreza N14.
