TRIPLE-HEADER FOR FOUNTAIN TIRE RACING AS MARYBETH TAKES WIN NUMBER THREE ______________________________
July 20th, 1998
Vancouver, Canada – Lady Luck was on the scene this weekend at Mission Raceway Park as Marybeth Harrison took her third straight win in the CFDA championship. Harrison had qualified her Fountain Tire Racing formula car less than 2/10th’s of a second off Seattle Washington’s Coley Tipton’s fastest time of 52.837 with a 53.011; putting her second on the grid for the race. A disappointing standing start saw her in fourth place out of Turn 1 but a quick come-back soon saw her in second with a pass on Tipton putting her in first.
Her number one spot was short-lived however, as Tipton made a move on Harrison only to lose it again … this time to Aldergove’s Daryle Redlin who had qualifed 1/10th of a second behind Marybeth in his new Formula Ford. Unfortunately, Redlin’s car had mechanical problems and both Tipton and Harrison were able to get by with 4th place Olov Brandfors hot on their heels.
“Olov was actually ahead at one point until I passed him for 3rd, passed Daryle for 2nd and ended up behind Coley for the better part of the race.” Marybeth explains. From there, the race leveled out as the drivers dealt with backmarkers, the summer heat and changing track conditions – a result of liquid from an overheating car.
“By the 5 minute marker I was pretty sure I’d end up having to settle for second,” stated Marybeth. “Coley and I were lapping within hundreds of a second of each other and it would have taken more than the time we had left in the race to catch him. I was more worried about Olov behind me who was aggressively trying to pass, especially during the last few laps.”
But as fate would have it, Tipton spun going into Turn 5 and Harrison emerged onto the straight in the lead. She was able to hold Olov off long enough to take the checkered flag; her third win in a row.
