Michael Himes died late Friday night from injuries sustained during in the IMSA 2-Hour Endurance Championship race at the Daytona International Speedway.

The Californian apparently lost control and hit a wall head-on while attempting to negotiate the backstretch chicane

He was transported from the speedway to Halifax Medical Center where he was pronounced dead several hours later.

Himes, 42, is the first IMSA Endurance Championship driver to die in a race in the 12-year history of the series, and the 26th racing-related fatality at the Daytona track since it opened in 1959.
