BACK-TO-BACK WINS FOR FOUNTAIN TIRE RACING May 24th, 1998
Vancouver, Canada -- Despite stalling her Fountain Tire Racing Euroswift at the start, up and coming West Coast driver, Marybeth Harrison came away with her second CFDA (Canadian Formula Drivers Association) win this weekend.
Marybeth explains what happened during the standing start: "I was starting in the pole position but it was pouring rain and I was worried about spinning my Goodyear rain tires at the start. As a result, I decided to keep the revs down a bit before dropping the clutch. Unfortunately, I ended up stalling instead and simply had to sit there as the rest of the grid went flying past me. Luckily, I was able to get restarted and then took off after the pack."
Passing was the next challenge ... "There was so much spray from the rain that you couldn't see a thing. As I closed on the cars down the straightaway, I'd just hit a wall of white mist. I would just take a deep breath, drive into it and start looking to my right for the brake markers. Once I saw "#5", I'd just hit the brakes and hope & pray that the driver in front was braking at relatively the same distance. It was unbelievable."
Her strategy seemed to work well as she managed to pick off almost a competitor a lap to regain the lead on lap 9 amidst a cheering fan section in the stands. "Every time she made a pass, a few of us would start cheering," explains one fan. "By the time Marybeth made the pass for the lead, we had just about everyone in the stands yelling. It was great."
Once she gained the lead, Marybeth drove a flawless race to the checkered.
From here, Marybeth heads to Detroit for the CART race and will be racing in the Neon Challenge Celebrity race in Minneapolis June 26 & 27th before heading home for the next CFDA July 17th & 18th. For more information, contact Mach One Racing at 604 939 7333 or http://www.mach1-racing.com.
