Mark Speller wins in Super Coupe Cup at Croft.
Mark Fish Motorsport's 18-year-old Super Coupe Cup newcomer Mark Speller had a clean sweep of two class pole positions and two race wins at Croft last weekend.
Race 1: 1st in class, 6th overall
With almost half a second in hand after the qualifying session, Speller's Rover 216 GTi was demoted from the class lead at the start of race one on Saturday and spent much of the fifteen minute encounter trying to regain the lost ground.
Despite losing more time with an off-track excursion in the early stages of the race, the Hertfordshire-based teenage fought his way back through the order, capitalising when several drivers fell foul of the fierce battle for position.
Having recovered to second in class by the penultimate lap, Speller trailed erstwhile class leader Dean Clements for several corners before rocketing past at Tower to head the field going into the last lap. An almost faultless final tour gave Speller the Rover class win and his first ever race victory.
Race 2: 1st in class, 4th overall
The second of the weekend's two Super Coupe Cup rounds followed much the same pattern with Speller starting from a comfortable class pole.
As in race one, he was initially relegated from the head of the class but harried his way back into contention in the early stages of the race. The challenging North Yorkshire track caught out several runners and with the majority of the thirteen-car field rally crossing through the Darlington countryside at one stage or another, Speller cruised through to claim his second win in commanding style.
"I'm really pleased with the outcome of this weekend," he said. "I was particularly happy with my qualifying performance considering I've never raced at this circuit before. This is my first season of racing so I'm delighted to have won two races early on in the year.
"I'll be looking to capitalise on these results when we go to Brands Hatch next month. My aim now is to win more races and improve my championship ranking."
After seven races, Mark Speller lies third in the Rover point standings.
Round eight of the Super Coupe Cup takes place at Brands Hatch, 13/14 July.
