Taws ends ice racing early
Eighteen-year-old racing driver Ashley Taws of Newmarket, Ontario, wound up her 2002 ice racing campaign, February 9-10 by showing that she hasn't lost her edge. Her previous outings in the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs - Ontario Region's 2002 Magnum Ice Race Series at the fairgrounds in Minden, Ontario, had been blighted by mechanical troubles, but last weekend she finally had a chance to show her skills.
It wasn't all smooth sailing as her engine misfired badly through the early laps of each race, but with four races on tap throughout the weekend, there were several opportunities to try to fix the car. Despite a snowstorm making for less than optimal engine tuning conditions, the hood of Ashley's car was always up as parts were checked and cleaned. Some progress was made, but Ashley's motor never seemed completely healthy.
At the start of each race, with her car coughing and sputtering, she lost ground until the engine caught its breath. Once the motor was running nicely, however, Ashley turned up the heat and had some exciting battles.
"There was some great racing out there," Ashley said with a big grin as she described the bumping and banging that's hard to avoid when cars race on ice. "One time I got hit and the passenger door flew open!" The cool-headed youngster simply drove alongside the snowbank that surrounds the track and closed the door.
Just as Ashley's ice racing season seems to be taking an upturn, she must abandon the rest of the series which is running late this year due to a lack of ice several weeks ago. Her main focus in open-wheel racing and, with spring not all that far away, she must begin preparing for the 2002 season.
"It's too bad that I have to miss the rest of the ice races," Ashley said, "Especially when it seemed like we were starting to get the car sorted out, but with the races starting late this year, I've just run out of time. I had a lot of fun though, it was nice to see the ice racing gang again and I hope to be back again next year."
