SLACK, WHITTON, SHUMAKER COMPLETE DOUBLE VICTORY WEEKEND
FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Feb. 6, 2000) - Jared Whitton, Carrollton, Derek Shumaker, Conroe and Rod Slack, Fort Worth, completed weekend sweeps of auto racing action Sunday during the Winter Shootout at Lil' Texas Motor Speedway. Slack came from the back of the Pro/Masters Legends division feature race to post a second straight commanding win. Whitton took his fourth Shootout Semi Pro Legends division race of the series while Shumaker earned his second Bandolero triumph in as many days. James Landrum, Mesquite, earned his initial Chargers Legends feature victory while Charlie Pigeon, Abilene, topped the Bandolero Outlaw run. Slack shot from eighth starting berth to the lead midway through the combined Pro/Masters 25-lap affair. He defeated 1999 national Semi Pro dirt champion Cam Case, Oklahoma City, OK, by 2.01 seconds. Steve Kidwell, Southlake, recovered from a mid-race incident to take home the show position. Whitton's victory came in similar back-to-front fashion. Whitton and two other drivers were penalized to the back of the 12-car field for a first-lap flag infraction. Whitton skillfully wove through the field, taking the lead on the 18th circuit of the one-fifth mile banked asphalt oval. Whitton pulled away to a 3.48-second victory margin over Ryan Lawler, Colleyville and Buddy Goudy, Benbrook. Shumaker took the lead on the 13th lap when race-long pacesetter John Gottsacker, University Park, spun out following contact. Until that point a fierce five-car battle ensued from the green flag. Shumaker won by 0.25 seconds over Andrew Lewis, Coppell and Nick Hinojosa, Irving. Landrum was awarded the Charger victory when apparent victor Matthew Martin, Mansfield, was penalized for rough driving on the final lap. Martin and leader Rusty Vinson, New Braunfels, made contact in the third turn. Following Landrum in the finishing order was Blake Calloway, Austin and Steve Fleming, Rockwall. The final Winter Shootout race will be on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Lil' Texas.
