QUARTET REPEAT IN 1998 SEASON CLOSER FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Dec. 19, 1998) - A quartet of Legends and Bandolero drivers closed out the 1998 season in style Saturday afternoon at Lil' Texas Motor Speedway by winning their second consecutive Winter Shootout auto racing features. Michael Hansen, Plano, led wire-to-wire in the 15-lap Pro/Master Legends feature. State champion Casey Smith, Austin, battled fellow teenager J.C. Umscheid, Cedar Park, through the 15-round Semi Pro feature and came out with his second straight win. Other repeaters included Jared Whitton, Carrollton, in the Chargers and Michael Umscheid, Cedar Park, in the Bandoleros. Hansen, last season's Texas Semi Pro champ, ruled the Pro and Masters divisions for the second straight program at the one-fifth mile paved oval. Hansen pushed his AT&T Wireless coupe into the lead at the green flag and held off teammate Steve Kidwell, Southlake, by 1.15 seconds. Kidwell, who earned the Masters Division win, bested Ed Baumann, San Antonio. Smith and Umscheid ran side-by-side for the opening lap before Smith took control on the second lap. He kept the Smith Excavating mount ahead to the checkered flag, 0.77 seconds ahead of Umscheid. Blake Hansen, Plano, took third. Buddy Goudy, Benbrook, held off Whitton for 14 laps of the 15-circuit Charger main event. Whitton passed Goudy with an outside move in lapped traffic to take the lead he never relinquished. Goudy spun on the final lap and finished last. Hal Collins, Fort Worth, trailed Whitton by 1.12 seconds with Paul Collins, Fort Worth, in third. Umscheid, the younger brother of J.C., held off track champion Josh Gilbert, Grapevine, in the Bandolero feature shortened to eight laps because of rain. Travis Ashwood, Fort Worth, placed third. The next Winter Shootout for Legends and Bandoleros at Lil' Texas Motor Speedway will be staged Saturday, January 9 at 1:00 p.m.
