LEGENDS, BANDOLERO RACES SPICE UP AFTERNOONS

FORT WORTH-DALLAS (June 8, 1999) - Legends Cars were introduced in 1992 as an affordable, entry-level form of short track auto racing for the entire family to participate in. The Umscheid family of Cedar Park, Texas has taken the family participation angle to the fullest extent.

A trio of Umscheids, father David along with sons J.C. and Michael are among over 80 entries for this weekend’s Legends and Bandolero racing at Texas Motor Speedway. The events on the frontstretch quarter-mile asphalt oval will be part of pre-race activities for Saturday’s Longhorn 500 Presented by MCI WorldCom Pep Boys Indy Racing League event and Friday’s Pronto Auto Parts 400 for NASCAR Craftsman Trucks.

The Umscheids are successes on three levels of short track racing. Dad David is the defending Texas state champion in the Pro Division of Legends racing, the pinnacle of Legends competition. Teenage son J.C. was the runnerup in the Texas Semi Pro standings last year while Michael is a leading favorite to capture the Bandolero races for drivers as young as nine years of age.

"We got involved in Legends racing because other types of cars became so expensive," said David, a statewide late model champion last decade. "It was much cheaper and racing became fun again.

"It seemed like the right thing to do. My kids were growing up, they had been at race tracks almost since they were born. Racing Legends and Bandoleros looked like something we could do as a family."

Friday’s Legends and Bandolero races begin at 3:00 p.m. with Saturday’s events starting at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for each day’s superspeedway races, which allow admission to the short track events, are available daily at the speedway ticket office, by calling (817) 215-8500, at www.texasmotorspeedway.com or at TicketMaster locations.
