ELDER SELECTED TO JOIN IMPERIAL VALLEY FB COACHES ASSN. HALL OF FAME

OXNARD, Calif. (April 5, 2010) -- Goodyear Racing public relations representative Lee Elder has been selected for induction into the Imperial Valley Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held Saturday, April 10, in Brawley, California.

Elder, 53, was selected for his work as Sports Director at KROP radio in Brawley and for his years as the Sports Editor of the Imperial Valley Press.

"This is a big thrill for me," Elder said. "I think I'm the second media person to be selected. I was in the audience when the late Don Knight was inducted a few years back."

Knight was the IV Press Sports Editor immediately before Elder.

Elder was hired by the late Jack Stodelle in 1981 to become the News Director at KROP. Stodelle allowed Elder to add sports announcing to his responsibilities. Elder announced Brawley High School football and Imperial Valley College basketball games at KROP and later announced IVC football on another Valley station.

"I covered news, too, and was a disc jockey at night, maybe the worst DJ the Valley has ever had," Elder grinned. "When I went to the newspaper, I was able to concentrate entirely on sports."

Elder moved with his family to Oxnard in 1989 to join the Oxnard Press-Courier, returning to the IV Press briefly in 1994.

"It's a good thing my parents taught me to say 'thank you,'" Elder said. "I have a lot of people to thank on the tenth."

Since ending his second stint with the IV Press, Elder has made his living in the auto racing business. He worked for NASCAR for six years before starting with Goodyear in 2001. In 2008, he filled an unexpired term on the Ventura County Board of Education.

Elder lives with his wife of 24 years, Amy, in Oxnard. They have two children.
