SCHRADER TO RUN WINSTON WEST RACE AT CALIFORNIA With Ken Schrader’s success in the NASCAR Winston West Series, the Oakwood Homes team elected to run the Winston West race at California Speedway on May 1. He has six wins in 11 Winston West starts.
Schrader won the inaugural Winston West event at California Speedway in 1997 after starting from the pole and won this event last year. If Schrader is able to get the pole on Thursday, he will succeed in getting three consecutive poles in three different NASCAR series. He had the pole for the Busch Series and Winston Cup Series races at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend. Schrader holds the Winston West qualifying record with a time of 40.084 seconds and speed of 179.623 mph at California. Schrader was the first repeat winner at the California Speedway.
Ken and his wife Ann will enjoy their second year participating in the Kyle Petty charity ride. This year, however, Ann will pilot her own bike. She completed the North Carolina Motorcycle Rider Course this year and purchased a Honda Shadow 750. She has logged over 1,000 miles on her bike in the last two weeks including rides to the Bristol and Martinsville races preparing for the ride. The Schrader’s will participate in the ride for two days before heading back to Charlotte for a Winston Cup test session.
“It is a lot of fun to compete in the Winston West Series,” said Schrader. “I am really looking forward to Fontana. It is a great track that kind of reminds me of Michigan. There is a lot of opportunity to pass, but it is important to stay in the groove or you could easily end up in the wall. I have had success in the Winston West Series, especially at Fontana, and the Oakwood Homes team is optimistic about continuing that success.”
The car the team will be utilizing in the Winston West race was formerly a Winston Cup car from Andy Petree Racing. It was recently converted to a Winston West car. “Basically the rules are very similar between Winston Cup and Winston West,” said Chris Carrier, crew chief of the Oakwood Homes car. “The engine is the main thing that needs to be changed. We have a car that is even better than the one used last year.”
WINSTON WEST SUCCESS Schrader has six Winston West wins in 11 starts. The wins came at Portland (1993), Bakersfield (1994), Las Vegas (1996), Fontana (1997), Las Vegas (1997) and Fontana (1998). He also has accumulated five poles, nine top-five and 10 top-10 finishes. He has earned a total of $118,917. This will be his seventh consecutive year running a race in the Winston West Series.
