TULSA, Okla. (June 25, 2006) -- " American Sprint Car Series Mid-South Region competitor Josh Lofton of Stamps, Arkansas, passed away Saturday, Saturday, June 24. The 25-year-old drowned in the little Missouri River in Arkansas' Ouachita County.

According to AP reports, "officials say a picnic was taking place Saturday and Lofton disappeared when a group of people decided to swim to a sandbar in the river. The group searched for Lofton without success, then called emergency officials." Lofton's body was found early Sunday morning.

The 2004 Winged Modified champion at Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, LA, Lofton moved to the ASCS ranks in 2005, making his ASCS debut in Gulf South Region competition at Champion Park Speedway in Haughton, LA, on March 12.

In his second year of ASCS competition, Lofton was ranked second in current 2006 ASCS Mid-South Region point standings.

Arrangements for Josh Lofton's funeral are at Smith Funeral Home in Stamps, Arkansas, on Thomas Street (870-533-4406 or 870-533-2555). Visitation is Monday, June 26th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral is Tuesday, June 27th, at 10:00 a.m.

The entire staff of the American Sprint Car Series extends it deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of Josh Lofton.
