DIDIER SCHRAENEN QUICKEST IN HONDA/MICHELIN PRACTICE AT MOSPORT
Bowmanville, ON, June 17, 2005 - Didier Schraenen of Mont-Saint-Hilaire (QC) posted the fastest lap in the one Honda/Michelin Challenge Series free practice session held Friday at Mosport International Raceway. Schraenen drove his Énergie/NAPA/RDS Honda Civic Coupe around the 3.957-kilometres Mosport International Raceway in 1 minute 44.989 seconds for an average speed of 135.683 kph. He edged Frédérick Lelièvre by only 0.065 seconds. Lelièvre, who made the overnight 12-hour trek from Mont-Joli, Quebec, posted his best lap at the end of the session with a lap time of 1:45.054 (135.599 kph). Third quickest in the session was Alex Penfold of Georgetown, Ontario. The Pfaff Leasing Honda driver completed his best circuit around the road course in 1:45.932.
''We were not pushing too much because there was a mist during the session and that made the track greasy,'' said Schraenen, who spun during the session but managed to continue. ''Tomorrow is the big day. I will definitely go for the pole because this year, each point counts in the tight championship race. I'm happy with the performance because we have a good set-up for this weekend. Let's hope that tomorrow's results will see me back on top of the charts.''
Kris Rams of Toronto put in the fourth quickest lap of the day, followed by defending series champion Steven Laporte of Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs. Nick Wittmer of Montreal, the winner of round 2 held last weekend in Montreal, finished sixth overall, ahead of Emmanuel Boivin-Moreau of Longueuil and his brother Kuno Wittmer. A pair of rookies, Philip Major of Ottawa and Matt Champagne of Fonthill, Ontario round out the Top-10.
In the points standings, Schraenen leads the championship with 65 points, one ahead of Laporte. Nick Wittmer is third with 58 points, followed by Alex Penfold with 54 and Kuno Wittmer with 50.
Drivers will return to the track on Saturday for a 30-minute qualifying session. The session will set the grid for Sunday's 16-lap race. Round 3 of the Honda/Michelin Challenge Series is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
