The third round of the Argentinian Touring Car Championship (TC 2000) disputed at San Juan province had one and only one winner: Gabriel Furlán dominated with the Mitsubishi Lancer while Christian Ledesma and Gabriel Ponce de León completed the podium.
After Viedma round, two weeks ago, Furlán was waiting for this competition a lot. His confident in the car wasn`t wrong and the Mitsubishi had a great perfonmance during all the weekend.
¨El Zona¨ raceway isn`t just another circuit in the TC2000 shedule. It`s may be the most difficult track in Argentina and every driver want to put his name in the winner list. It`s a TC 2000 classic and Furlán know it.
Already on saturday taking the pole position, Furlán was the great candidate. But he wasn`t alone. Norberto Fontana, Juan M. Silva, Ponce de León, Lucas Armellini and company were ready to a big fight.
Furlán handled the 40 laps of competition excellent, using his car in the right moment. Non of the three safety car periods complicated the road to his third victory in the series and dominated all the attempts of Fontana, last winner here, to take the leadership.
This second place of Ledesma with the Astra returns, at least for a while, the smile to the Chevrolet factory team after the very bad perfonmance shown last round by both cars.
The winner of the season opener at Roca raceway on April disputed the competition knowing one important thing: 40 laps is a lot and gives time to wait. And that what he did. Ledesma stayed with the front rhythm always in the top five places. The reward appeared in the end taking advantage of the dirty on the track left by Nicolás Filiberti`s Megane that put out of the road Fontana and Silva, second and third, just five laps before the chequered flag.
Current champion had another hard final race. Ponce de León iniciated the competition from 13th. place after a complicated short morning race. Like at Viedma, the Focus advanced ten positions this time to take the third podium with three races disputed.
The three safety car period allowed Ponce to close the gap with the leaders and his hardest rival was Ledesma. Both had an interesting fight during 15 laps, the Ford`s engine wasn`t enough to pass the Chevrolet, strong in the rest of the circuit.
Like Ledesma, the champion acceded to the podium with the incident of lap 35 closing an unexpected result one more time in the podium.
The greats unfortunates of the day were Fontana, Silva and Armellini. Oil on the track left three of the top five drivers in the classification out all due to an sleepy flagger. This situation can not happen again in a series that is one of the most professionals in all America.
The final rush without the Pace Car saw Furlán in the road to victory in front a crowd of 26000 people present around the circuit.
Only ten cars crossed the chequered flag. The final classification: Furlán, Ledesma, Ponce de León, Esteban Tuero, Luis Belloso and Carlos Okulovich in top six places.
Ponce leads the standings with 44 points followed by Ledesma with 40 and Furlán, 38. Tuero, fourth, has 23. Fontana and Silva, two candidates to dispute the championship, must add many points in next races if they want a chance this year.
TC 2000 will continue on May 30th. at Paraná raceway.
