Future Race Engineers to Participate in Inaugural Formula SAE West
WARRENDALE, Pa. (6/2/2006) -- Want to meet the Indy 500-winning engineers of the future?
Then plan on attending the inaugural Formula SAE® West June 14 - 17, 2006, at California Speedway in Fontana, Calif. Dynamic events are scheduled June 16 and 17.
During this year's Indianapolis 500, the Marlboro Team Penske engineering team of Tom German, Justin Horning and Tom Janiczek received the prestigious Louis Schwitzer Award for Engineering Innovation and Excellence at a news conference more than a week before driver Sam Hornish took the checkered flag on race day. The annual award, sponsored by BorgWarner, and presented by the Indiana Section of SAE International, recognizes engineering excellence at the Indianapolis 500 and is named after early racing pioneer and past Indiana Section Chairman, Louis Schwitzer.
As part of the award, the team received a prize of $10,000 and a $1,000 scholarship to an engineering school of the winner's choice. Since Tom German was a former participant in the Formula SAE program at the University of Akron, the scholarship was doubled to $2,000.
Formula SAE is a component of SAE's Collegiate Design Series, which also includes the Clean Snowmobile Challenge, Mini Baja, Aero Design and Super Mileage events. The Collegiate Design Series has distinguished itself as a relevant proving ground for the aerospace, automotive and racing engineers of the future.
