Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) celebrated his maiden Formula Ford win in the second round of the South African Championship during the Vodacom Power Tour races run at the Killarney in Cape Town today.
Wolk had threatened a race win last season, but could not pull it off, although he did cross the line first at Port Elizabeth only to be excluded from the race. He started today's first race from second on the grid, but benefited from pole sitter Cristiano Morgado (Buondi Caffe' Mygale) failing to make the start after blowing an engine in the morning warm-up.
Reigning World Max Challenge Champion Morgado's misfortune left Wolk to take the lead at the start of the race, and then pull away to a comfortable 5 second win after Lesley Reynolds (Airnet Travel Mygale), David Veringa (SABAT Mygale) and Englishman Ian Parsons (Nu-Phalt Van Diemen) battled over second place.
Reynolds made a mistake on lap three, dropping him down to ninth place, while ahead Parsons and Veringa continued to scrap over second. Veringa managed to get his nose ahead at the start of the final lap, but Parsons repelled the attack to finish second ahead of the reigning Formula Vee champion.
Ford Development driver Jennifer Murray (Ford Credit/Ford Racing Mygale) started from ninth on the grid in her second ever car race, but drove very impressively to finish fourth, her best result in the category. She had been quick in free practice, but an off-road excursion in qualifying curtailed her running, and left her languishing in ninth place for the start.
Reynolds recovered to take a lonely fifth ahead of Donovan Howard (Associated Auto Mygale).
Morgado lined up in pole position for the second race, but a poor start saw Wolk jump into the lead at the start. He hardly looked back as he opened up a healthy lead. However, towards the end of the race he felt the car slowing, allowing Parsons to catch up and get past with a lap to go. Wolk was not to be denied though, and fought his way back into the lead with a bold manoeuvre at the final corner, to take the win by just 0.055 sec from Parsons.
Behind the two leaders, Morgado, Veringa, Martin Robinson (HyrdoMobile Mygale) and Jayde Kruger (FAG Mygale) were locked in a fierce battle for third. Morgado departed this bunch on lap 6 when he went off the circuit after his accelerator jammed open, while Robinson's race came to an end with clutch failure on lap 9.
That left Veringa to eventually finish third by less than a second from Kruger, with Reynolds in fifth and Murray in sixth.
First round winner Brett Maybery did not make the race meeting, while Armani Jamrozinski was competing abroad.
The result moves Parsons to the head of the championship table on 30 points, with Veringa in a close second on 26.
First overall: Robert Wolk
"It felt great to win my first Formula Ford race, and to make it a double win was even sweeter. The car went perfectly in the first race, but started slowing towards the end of the second, which made life a bit difficult with Ian (Parsons) being so close. He managed to get past me, but fortunately I got back ahead at the last corner. I have not planned to do the whole series; most likely I will only do about six races, so I am not sure when I will race again."
Second overall: Ian Parsons
"I am relatively happy with our performance today, but I am getting tired of second places. My car came on strongly in the latter stages of both races, which gave me a chance to challenge Robert in race two. I managed to get ahead of him, but at the last corner he got alongside and then just turned in. I could have held on, but we both would have crashed, so I backed out of it and let him ahead. It was quite a hard move, but fair. He outsmarted me this time, but it won't happen again. I do not particularly like the Killarney circuit, but am looking forward to going back to Kyalami next time out."
Third overall: David Veringa
"The weekend started badly for us - we broke a clutch and had a lot of problems - but in the end it turned out to be a really good weekend. We were still finding our way in the first race, but in the second it went much better. I am looking forward to going back to Kyalami now, so that we can kick some butt!"
