Robert Wolk (AfintaPart Mygale) continued his march towards the South African Formula Ford Championship at East London yesterday after taking a win and a second place to extend his points advantage to 33 points.
Meanwhile, reigning Formula Vee champion David Veringa (Sabat Batteries Van Diemen) scored his first win in the category in race two, and took the overall win for the day, after a superb performance. He is now just one point off second place in the championship.
Wolk qualified in pole position ahead of Veringa and Englishman Ian Parsons (Nu-Phalt Van Diemen), the latter holding second place in the championship. The first race saw Wolk and Veringa regularly changing positions around the circuit as they fought for the win, with Wolk pipping his rival to the flag by just 0.195 sec.
Parsons finished a distant third with Craig Allen (CART Van Diemen) scoring his best result in the category in fourth place. Martin Robinson (Hydromobile Mygale) drove well from eleventh on the grid to finish fifth ahead of Jayde Kruger (FAG Mygale).
The second race saw Wolk and Veringa challenging each other at the head of the pack once again until Wolk made a mistake just before half distance, which allowed Veringa to slip past and drive to a comfortable five second win.
An accident on the first lap brought out the safety car for two laps after Kruger made contact with Allen, who then hit Parsons, eliminating the latter two from the race.
There was a great scrap for third place involving Robinson, Paulo da Cunha (DCM Line Boring Van Diemen), Lesley Reynolds (Airnet Travel Mygale), Jennifer Murray (Ford Racing / Ford Credit Mygale) and Donovan Howard (Associated Auto Mygale).
Da Cunha dropped down to eighth when he spun shortly after mid-distance, leaving Reynolds to take third from Robinson, Ford development driver Murray and Howard. Da Cunha recovered to finish seventh.
First overall: David Veringa
"I can't explain how pleased I am to take my first win. All the work that has gone into it has been worthwhile, and it is very satisfying after we battled with our previous car earlier in the year. This win came when I really needed it."
Second overall: Robert Wolk
"I was a good weekend for me and overall I am very happy. We got further ahead in the championship, which is what counts at this stage of the year. It was nice to win the first race in front of my home crowd, but in the second I settled for second place after my mistake as I knew that Ian Parsons was already out."
Third overall: Martin Robinson
"After our poor qualifying I am very satisfied with the results we got today. The car was terrible when we put on our new rubber for qualifying. We changed the set-up completely for the race, and it paid off as the car was much better and I could challenge the guys up front."
