Formula Ford Championship - Round 1, AA Kyalami, Midrand.
Brett Mayberry (Investchem Mygale) dominated the opening round of the South African Formula Ford Championship in the Vodacom Power Tour races at AA Kyalami today.
After sitting out most of last year, Mayberry qualified in pole position and went on to win both races comfortably. Englishman Ian Parsons (Nu-Phalt Van Diemen) made an impressive South African racing debut by finishing third and second in the two races to take second overall for the day. He qualified third on the grid after a few problems in practice and qualifying, but quickly proved that he is going to be a serious championship challenger this season.
Reigning Formula Vee champion David Veringa (Sabat Mygale) also showed that he was going to challenge for title honours when he qualified second on the grid for both races. In the first race he followed Parsons for most of the race until the latter made a mistake with just three corners to go, allowing Veringa to nip past.
Armani Jamrozinski (Diesel / Pilot Freight Van Diemen) finished fourth overall after two fourth place finishes. His effort was set back by a practice accident that only allowed him three qualifying laps, and left him languishing fifth on the grid. After race one it was discovered that his engine was down on power, but he soldiered on for two solid points finishes.
Martin Robinson (Leeroy Somer Mygale) was fifth both times. He qualified fourth on the grid but lost out to Jamrozinski both times after hard fought battles. Lesley Reynolds (Airnet Travel Mygale) was sixth in both races.
The Ford Racing / Ford Credit development driver, former karter, Jennifer Murray made a solid start to her Formula Ford career, qualifying tenth and finishing in the same position in race one. Unfortunately, she was forced to retire after six laps in race two.
First overall: Brett Mayberry
"This was a perfect weekend and a great way to start the season. Everything went well from the start and at the end of the day it was quite easy as I managed to get a break early on both times. I am not sure of doing the whole season at this stage as we still need to find a sponsor, but hopefully this result will make it easier.
Second overall: Ian Parsons
"I really enjoyed my first experience of racing in South Africa. Kyalami is not an easy circuit and we had some problems in practice, including a blown engine, so I am very happy with the results I got today. It's encouraging to see that I am competitive and with more testing on the horizon, hopefully we can be challenging for the win from the next round."
Third overall: David Veringa
"I am happy with the result and getting some points on the board, although obviously I would have preferred to finish ahead of Ian. We had a good scrap in the first race and it bodes well for the year ahead."

2) Ian Parsons 14
