The Argentinian Touring Car Chamionship (TC 2000) disputed yesterday it third round at Viedma raceway, located southern Argentina, where factory Ford team repeated last season`s 1-2 with Gabriel Ponce de León and Diego Aventín followed by Honda`s driver, Fabián Yannantuoni on third.
It was the same result as 2004. The Berta Motorsport swept with the highest steps of the podium. Ponce de León took the victory on the second lap, when Martín Basso`s Honda Civic entered too fast the first turn and lost the leadership position.
From that moment to the end, the leader was one men, Ponce de León. "I`m very happy with this result, I was waiting for it after all the problems we suffered in the first two races", he commented. The winner means Buenos Aires and Paraná, when he retired with mechanics problems fighting for the victory. "Thanks to the great car I could make this great race. The track was to complicated due to the dust and you must be focus, however I was sourprised by Basso`s move. Although I would of fight if this didn`t happened", expressed Ponce.
It was 12th victory for Ponce de León after 107 in the series his debut in 1998.
Aventín took from Viedma an important result after an also complicated start of season. Aventín, who made his debut in TC 2000 in this circuit a year ago, started the race from the pole, but he wasn`t able to keep it in the first move and lost two places in hands of Basso and his teammate. From that point, Aventín had an interesting argued with Norberto Fontana by halfway through the competition and was benefited in the end with second place when the Toyota men retired after a fantastic job. "I want a congratulate Gabriel. This victory is very good for all the team. We knew both cars were quick and we proved it in this track", he mentioned.
About Fontana`s move to take him second place, Aventín said: "It was clean. We had a small friction, but we respected each other. Anyway, we`re gonna continue working to keep adding this year".
Yannantuoni`s podium saved Honda from another poor weekend. Despite the HRA team won satuday`s qualifying session on Buenos Aires, Paranán and Viedma, they still couldn`t achieve a victory.
The third driver of the team won the duel with his fellows teammates, Basso, fourth at the end, and Juan M. Silva, fifth. "I didn`t expect to be on the podium. The target was to arrive and add some points and so we did. The Fords were good here and I suffered a brake problem, but I`m happy with the podium", said Yannantuoni.
Both series champions couldn`t see the chequered flag at Viedma. Current number one, Christian Ledesma , retired after 11 with the engine of his Chevrolet Astra out. It was the same problem for Fontana, but more painful. The 2002 champion gave a great show with the Corolla, but when he was second and reaching the leader, the engine also determined the end for the former F1 driver.
The standings has Basso as the leader with 30 points after three rounds, followed by Ponce de León, Matías Rossi and Emiliano Spataro, all them with 29 units.
TC 2000`s action will continue on May 8th. at San Juan province.
