Perfect Weekend for Local Matador Stephane Ortelli: Victory and Lap Record

Monegasque Stephane Ortelli celebrated a perfect race weekend, posting pole, setting a new lap record, and taking victory of the fifth round of the Porsche Pirelli SuperCup in Monaco. The 1998 Le Mans winner for Porsche made a clean start and immediately pulled away from the field. Behind Ortelli, a fight ensued between second-placed Bernd Maylander and reigning vice-champion Oliver Mathai. Formula 1 test driver, Luciano Burti (BRA) and racing legend Marc Duez (VIP driver), put on a spectacular show which ended with both limping over the finish line after a close encounter in the last lap. French Formula 1 legends, Jacques Laffite (VIP driver, 17th), and Jean-Pierre Jarier (12th) proved their competitiveness in the field of 28 starters in front of over 100,000 spectators.

Stefane Ortelli (MC, winner): "A fantastic race! I pushed hard over the whole distance, then I heard a crack in third gear, but I tried not to worry about it. I hope this result is a good omen for the Le Mans 24 hour race in two weeks."

Bernd Maylander (D, second): "I want to thank Sascha Maassen - he was very fair when we were braking for the first corner. My race was exciting. From the fifth I couldn't engage the right gear for slow corners, but I still managed to keep Oliver behind."

Oliver Mathai (D, third): "I couldn't break Bernd's concentracion today, even though I braked later into the corners. I attempted to overtake him coming out of the tunnel but he's a tough customer and we almost collided. A great race."

Luciano Burti (BRA, 14th, F1 test driver): "This was one of the most fan- tastic races of my life, and I learned the track perfectly. I know it inside out now."
