Ferrari Challenge Bertuzzi does the double at Imola Imola, 31st May - Costantino Bertuzzi did the double in the third round of the Europe South series of the Ferrari Challenge and Pirelli Trophy. The 1997 completely dominated the weekend proceedings: best time in qualifying, victory in the sprint and endurance races and fastest lap in both events.
In the sprint race, Bertuzzi made the most of pole position and shot off into the lead, followed by Stefano Livio who had started alongside him on the front row. None of the others could match Bertuzzi's pace and he won as he pleased. The race behind him was certainly not dull with Beppe Schenetti having several attempts at resting second place from Livio. The place was decided on the penultimate lap, when Schenetti attacked Livio once again at Tamburello, but finished in the gravel trap and could not get going again. Livio thus finished second, ahead of series leader Adriano Baso and Giorgio Tibaldo. With the grid for the endurance race decided on fastest lap times from the sprint race, Bertuzzi once again started from pole. The running order of the second race was pretty similar to the first. Bertuzzi led with quite a comfortable advantage over Schenetti, Livio, De Iturbe, Garbagnati, Baso and Tibaldo. These two livened up the leader board by passing Gentleman Driver Garbagnati while Livio and Schenetti once again kept the crowds entertained, this time with their positions reversed. The result was the same as in the sprint race: Livio actually managed to get past Schenetti with four laps remaining and then held off his attacker.
After today's race, Adriano Baso manages to hang on to the overall lead, but with his advantage over Bertuzzi reduced to just three points (78 - 75.) In the Gentlemen Driver's classification, Garbagnati still leads. Next round is in two weeks time at Magione.
