Lots of exciting moments we lived in the third round of Turismo Carretera disputed in the circuit of Rio Gallegos, south of Argentina. In a fantastic race, Fabia Hermoso (Ford / 44) took the victory for the first time in the category. The podium was completed by Juan Maria Traverso (Chevrolet / 39) and the leader in the championship, Christian Ledesma (Chevrolet / 5).
Like I said before, lots of things passed during the weekend in Santa Cruz. Everything started on saturday with the qualify session with rain in some moments and sun in others.
This situation gave a different grid. The fastest was Omar Martinez (Ford / 2) followed by Norberto Fontana (Dodge / 115), who had a great weekend in his debut in Turismo Carretera in spite of what happened in the final race.
Fortunately the weather changed and Santa Cruz dawned with sun.
The final race started with Fontana (because he won the fastest series) and Martinez in the first row followed by Gustavo Tadei (Ford / 21), Hermoso and Ledesma in the top five. 46 cars iniciated the competition.
Already in the first lap, Martinez passed Fontana and took the leadership. The same did Tadei with the former driver of Sauber in F1. However in lap 4 Martinez was leading by 1.9s when an engine problem put his Ford out of the race. After two bad races in the start of the season, Martinez lost a very important chance of win in the 2003 season. After this situation, Tadei took the first place followed by Fontana and Patricio Di Palma (Torino / 19), who retired in lap 9 with mechanics problems in his car. It`a pity because he was doing a fantastic job with the Torino.
In that same lap the Pace Car appeared in the track during three laps. In lap 13 we lived a dramatic moment when Fontana tried to pass Tadei in the first curve. The T.C. 2000 champion hit the leader and both left the race and also a great opportunity for a good result. However for Fontana it was a fantastic debut in T.C. Norberto wants to add expierence this season and go for the championship in 2004. Tadei lost a clear chance to get his first victory in the category after 63 races.
When it rest only ten laps to finish the competition, Harmoso took the leadership and he never left it until the chequered flag. Fabian Pisandelli (Chevrolet / 67) was in a promising second place, but a mistake four laps before the end made him lost the opportunity to be in the podium in his sixth race in T.C.
Finally and after a hard fight with Traverso in the end of the competition, Hermoso took his first victory in the category. His debut was in September of the 1994 season. After 107 races until today his best result was a seventh position. A deserved result for the 30 years old driver. A real fighter of the Turismo Carretera.
For Traverso this was his first podium since he won the 1999 championship. An important result for start fighting the 2003 season.
Who completed a goog work were Ledesma and the champion Ortelli (Chevrolet / 1) with the third and fourth place.
It was a horrible weekend for Bessone (Dodge / 7) and Marcos Di Palma (Chevrolet / 6). Bessone qualified 46th. on saturday and a crash left him out of race in the fifth lap of the final race.
M. Di Palma qualified 25th. and he retired in the first lap with the gearbox broken.
After three rounds, Ledesma leads the championship with 63.50, followed by Ortelli with 55 and Acuña with 36.
The next competition of Turismo Carretera will be next March 30 in La Plata.
