Mugello - April 02, 2000 EURO STC RESULTS - weather: cloudy, track: dry, temperature 170C.
Mission accomplished. Peter Kox and his JAS Engineering Honda Accord, scored two convincing wins in the Euro STC opening at Mugello. After he set pole position on saturday, the Dutchman managed to contain Nicola Larini's assaults in both the 9 lap races.
It was a perfect start for the new born European Super Touring Cup. The three makes on the podium of race-one and the many overtakings and clashes, proved that the 2-litre tin-tops have still a lot to say and that their era is not yeat at an end.
"I'm so happy for the team - Kox said after the second race - because all the guys did an incredible job to find out the best set-up for this difficult track. Both the races were very very tough; Larini never gave up and I had to fight hard and take my breathe to contain him".
RACE-ONE. At the start, Naspetti tried to squeeze between Giovanardi's and Larini's Alfas; but the three of them clashed and the BMW's front suspension collapsed. Kox took the lead from Larini, while Giovanardi recovered to third, despite a front rim broken in the early collision. De Lorenzi tried to overtake Colciago for fourth, but ran into him; they both stopped in the gravel trap. In the second part of the race, Morbidelli was catching Giovanardi and finally managed to pass him; their cars collided in the manoeuvre and the alfista avoided to go off the track thanks to an acrobatic countersteering. In the last lap Larini attacked Kox, but the Dutchman was able to maintain the lead and win by 0.7 seconds. Morbidelli finished third, from Giovanardi and young Slovakian Studenic.
RACE-TWO. Naspetti took the start from the pit-lane, while Pigoli flashed at the green light and surprisingly took the lead from Kox and Larini. Pigoli maintained the leadership until the end of the opening lap, but finally he had to open the door to Kox, Larini, Morbidelli and Giovanardi. During the 4th lap, Giovanardi overtook Morbidelli for third; behind them De Lorenzi, Colciago and a recovering Naspetti were fighting for fifth position. Again, as in the first race, Larini challenged Kox, while Giovanardi was closing the gap; but the three of them finished in the order, and cox won Kox by an even narrower margin of 0.6 seconds. Naspetti completed his recovery, overtaking Colciago for sixth.
The Euro STC will resume at Pergusa, in Sicily, on April 30th.
