FIA SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 18 RACE 2
The sun was breaking through the clouds, the temperature had risen and the track was dry.
Second win puts Tarquini equal with Larini Racing Box withdrew Sambataro's Audi A4 Quattro after its engine blew during the first race.
Symanzick's Opel Vectra closes the grid after having missed race 1. The AGS Audi A4 Quattro of Colciago and the two Conrero Alfa Romeo 156s of Lancelotti and Gulinelli start from the pit lane, the teams having renounced to the parc fermé in order to carry out repairs. The Nordauto mechanics did an excellent job, replacing the damaged front wishbones on Massa's car within the allocated time. That enabled the Brazilian to maintain his grid position instead of being forced to start from the pit lane. Pigoli is the pole sitter on the reverse grid, with Zadra alongside him; Massa and Rosenblad are on the second row.
Start– Soli stalls his engine. Pigoli takes the lead from Massa and Zadra. The fight for position results in a collision between Giovanardi, Neal and Walfisch ; the Englishman's Nissan crashes into the pit wall.
Lap 1– Rosenblad is pushed off the track and rejoins. Zadra overtakes Massa for second place at the Farina corner. Top-10: 15 - 31 - 18 - 8 - 20 - 1 - 6 - 16 - 4 - 2

Tarquini overtakes De Lorenzi and Sardelli for third. Larini passes Thompson for seventh. Top-10: 31 - 1 - 4 - 18 - 20 - 15 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 19
Lap 4– De Lorenzi overtakes Sardelli for fourth and takes the lead in the Amateurs Trophy. Rosenblad overtakes Lempinen for tenth. Top-10: 31 - 1 - 4 - 20 - 18 - 2 - 6 - 15 - 5 - 26
Lap 5– Giovanardi and Tarquini overtake Massa moving into first and second places respectively. Tarquini is right on Giovanardi's tail. On the line the leader's margin is just 0.158 seconds. Walfisch overtakes Zadra for eighth. Top-10: 1 - 4 - 31 - 20 - 18 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 15 - 26
Lap 6– Tarquini taps Giovanardi's rear bumper and is shown a warning flag. When they cross the line the gap is 0.135 seconds. Top-10: 1 - 4 - 31 - 20 - 18 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 15 - 26
Lap 7– Larini and Thompson pass Sardelli climbing to fifth and sixth. Top-10: 1 - 4 - 31 - 20 - 2 - 6 - 18 - 5 - 15 - 26
Lap 8– After a number of rejected attacks, Tarquini manages to overtake Giovanardi at Varzi, a fast bend the Super Touring cars negotiate flat in sixth gear. Giovanardi tries to strike back, but in vain. De Lorenzi overtakes Massa for third. The Brazilian also slips behind Larini and Thompson. Sardelli pits for a puncture and loses his seventh place. Colciago recovers to eighth. Top-10: 4 - 1 - 20 - 2 - 6 - 31 - 5 - 7 - 26 - 15

Lap 11– Thompson manages to pass Larini for third. Top-10: 4 - 1 - 20 - 6 - 2 - 31 - 5 - 7 - 26 - 15
Lap 12– Tarquini has built up a margin, while Giovanardi is being chased by De Lorenzi. Top-10: 4 - 1 - 20 - 6 - 2 - 31 - 5 - 7 - 26 - 15
Lap 13– Thompson is chasing De Lorenzi, but the Italian manages to maintain his third position overall, which also means another win for him in the Amateurs Trophy. Top-10: 4 - 1 - 20 - 6 - 2 - 31 - 5 - 7 - 26 - 15
RACES 1 AND 2 QUOTES & NOTES
Gabriele Tarquini - nr 4 JAS Motorsport Honda– winner of Races 1 and 2 : "I am very pleased with today’s two wins. I pushed hard to obtain them, because in my position, a second place behind Giovanardi in race 2 would not have been good enough for my title hopes. The first race was trouble-free for me, as I took the lead at the start and Thompson did a perfect job in guarding my back, stealing valuable points from Giovanardi. In the second race I had a fair battle with Giovanardi, that I believe was very interesting for the spectators. During the fight, I had a warning from the race director, because I touched the back of Giovanardi’s car. I didn’t intend to push him off. Currently my car is unbeatable, and I also had great support from the team and from James Thompson, and all that will be very helpful for me in Estoril, where I will a good chance of winning the title. For my competitors, it will be very difficult to stay in front of me."
Fabrizio Giovanardi - nr 1 Alfa Romeo Team Nordauto Alfa Romeo– 3rd in race 1, 2nd in race 2. "I’m still leading this Championship, and that’s good news for today. We had a very tough weekend. I can confirm that Tarquini and I had a very fair battle. He touched me, but his car was faster. I tried to stay ahead of him, but it was impossible to keep him behind for the whole race. I am sure that at Estoril both races will be very hard. At this point of the Championship, I expect that the team will ask Larini to support me, but everything will depend on the result of the first race in Portugal."
James Thompson - nr 6 JAS Motorsport Honda– 2nd in Race1, 4th in Race 2 : "I am very happy to have finished on the podium in my first appearance in the European Championship. I have to thank the team, because they did their best to enable me to drive my old car, and to be competitive. I am also pleased because in the first race I helped Tarquini by finishing ahead of Giovanardi, which cost him three points. In the second race, I only needed one more lap to be able to overtake De Lorenzi and threaten Giovanardi’s second place. It was my first experience with the reverse grid, and I found it really exciting, even if I did lose some time overtaking an Audi and later when trying to catch Giovanardi."
Gianluca De Lorenzi - nr 20 GDL Racing BMW– 6th in Race 1, 3rd in Race 2 : "It is a very good result for my team, which is brand new, and is totally private. I am also happy because I am still recovering from the accident I had in my workshop in July. Although I must say that towards the end of the second race my right hand was aching badly. That’s why, unlike James Thompson, I was very happy that the race lasted only 13 laps ! Otherwise it would have been very difficult for me to keep him behind, both because of the pain and because my tyres were getting worn." <pre> Provisional standings after 18 of 20 rounds :
