FIA ETCC promoter launches independent trophy: a 250,000-euro prize money to be awarded in 2003.

FIA European Touring Car Championship promoter KSO has decided to re- establish an Independent Trophy within the 2003 FIA European Touring Car Championship.

Drivers who will be admitted to take part in the Trophy, will compete for winning a 250,000-euro prize money.

This is not the first time the FIA European Touring Car Championship is awarding money through trophies. During the 2001 season, two different trophies were organised: the Michelin Amateurs Trophy within the FIA European Super Touring Championship and the Michelin Under 25 Trophy within the FIA European Super Production Championship.

Winners were Italian driver Sandro Sardelli in the Michelin Amateurs Trophy and German driver Norman Simon in the Michelin Under 25 Trophy.

At the wheel of a PRO Motorsport Nissan Primera, Sardelli emerged as the best privateer and earned 40,000 euro from a total of 125,000 awarded.

"With the new FIA Super 2000 technical regulations adopted in the 2002 Championship, it was not the case to organise any trophy for independent drivers, because privateers did not have either the opportunity or the means to buy new cars. Now that we are facing the second season of this new category, such opportunities exist and there will be a clear distinction between works and independent teams," KSO general manager Marcello Lotti declared.

Details on the eligibility for the trophy and the system of awarding prizes will be unveiled within the next weeks.
