Roberto Colciago scored two unexpected wins at Imola, at the wheel of his Audi A4 Quattro. The driver of AGS Motorsport took the lead for good on lap 4 of race-one and then managed to stay in front for the rest of the day. "Despite these wins I'm out of the title contention - Colciago admitted - for I lost too many points in the previous races. It's a shame, because now my Audi is quite competitive on all tracks and in the next meetings I'll try to collect some more wins".

Behind Colciago, Fabrizio Giovanardi and Peter Kox rather thought to collect precious points for the championship than to aim for race wins. In the end, both were pleased enough.

"Colciago was unbeatable today and I did my race on Kox" said Giovanardi, who stretched his point lead to 12. "The broken bar affected my first race - Kox revealed - as the handling of my car was quite critic. I'm sure that if I had taken the lead I should have won".

Most disappointed drivers of the weekend were Nicola Larini and Emanuele Naspetti, who are both about to drop out of the title fight.

"I'm in a difficult position - Larini said - because since now on I'll have to help Giovanardi. My only hope is to grab one or two wins before the end of the season".

Naspetti threw away his chances, by spinning on his attack to Colciago in race-two.

"I knew that in the second part of the race Colciago's tyres might be better than mine - Naspetti declared - and that's why I tried to pass him soon. If I could get through I had the race in the pocket, but it didn't work. Now I know that I should better settle and finish second, but this year it looks like everything I try turns wrong".

RACE-ONE. Kox took the lead at the start and behind him the temperature went hot as drivers fought for positions. Giovanardi overtook Naspetti for 4th at Tosa, Colciago passed Larini for 2nd at Piratella; Larini reacted at Rivazza 1, but Colciago won the inside line and regained 2nd place at Rivazza 2. Giovanardi exploited the situation and dived inside teammate Larini, who was under Naspetti's attack. On lap 4. Colciago overbraked Kox (whose car suffered for a broken antirollbar) at Variante Bassa and took the lead; one lap later Naspetti overtook Larini after they clashed at Tosa. On lap 6 Giovanardi got Kox in the same way and the same place as Colciago did. The AGS Motorsport Audi was safe in the lead, from a quartet formed by Giovanardi, Kox, Naspetti and Larini. Positions didn't change, while De Lorenzi and Morbidelli finished 6th and 7th respectively.

Roda scored his first Euro STC point and Lucchetti withdrew with a blown engine.

RACE-TWO. Lucchetti didn't make the field. At the start Colciago took the lead from Naspetti who burnt the Alfas. Kox got trapped in the middle of the field and it took him a couple of laps to recover to 5th. Naspetti was on Colciago's tail and on lap 3 tried to overtake him at the Tosa. Colciago shut the door, the cars clashed and Naspetti spun. He had to let all the field pass by before rejoining the race. Colciago built up a small margin to Giovanardi, while Kox was treating Larini's 3rd place; eventually the Dutchman passed through. While Morbidelli was unchallenged in 5th place, there was a great fight for 6th between Pigoli, Gabellini, Sardelli, De Lorenzi, Roda and Naspetti. The latest spun again and dropped out of the points.

In the final lap, Kox tried invain to steal 2nd place to Giovanardi. While Pigoli claimed 6th from Gabellini and Roda.

The Euro STC will resume at Misano, Italy, on July 22 and 23.
