ETCC: European Touring Car Championship doubles in 2001

After a 13-year black-out, motorsport will not have ONE European Touring Car Championship, but TWO!

In order to satisfy the great interest car manufacturers are showing in competitions for 2-litre saloon cars, but also to meet their requirements to race with cars that already exist and are internationally ruled, the FIA Touring Car Commission decided to include two different Touring Car championships in the 2001 international calendar.

The Euro STC (European Super Touring Cup), that sealed its maiden season ten days ago, by crowning Fabrizio Giovanardi and Alfa Romeo, had already been appointed on October 4 by the World Motorsport Council, to become European Super Touring Championship.

In 2001 the Euro STC will maintain the actual FIA Super Touring rules, while new regulations will be submitted for approval to the World Motorsport Council, to be adopted since 2002.

Euro STC will be joined by a second continental series, reserved to those cars complying with the actual FIA Super Production technical regulations; a category that in recent years established itself in the whole world, giving life to a number of spectacular national championships, at reasonable costs.

Both these championships will be parts of the Eurosport Super Racing Weekends, but they will have different races, different classifications and they will crown their own European Champions for drivers and teams.

The final approval to both championships will be given by the World Motorsport Council on its next meeting, scheduled for December 4, only after their technical and sporting regulations will be passed.

International Sport Communication, organizer of the Euro STC, has given the FIA its availability to organize the European Super Production Championship as well.
