Peter Kox proved himself as Euro STC's "Lord of the pole", setting again the fastest lap in qualifying at Monza. That will enable him to start from the first spot of the grid for the third time in four meetings. Honda's "Flying Dutchman" was always quickest on Saturday, though his best qualifying time of 1:53.318 didn't match those set in free practices (1:52.783).
"I broke the front splitter jumping over the kerbs of the first chicane at the beginning of my qualifying lap. It's a shame, because otherwise I would be quicker. Indeed I thought my time wasn't enough for the pole; I expected Giovanardi could beat it and I was keeping ready for another try".
And Fabrizio Giovanardi tried really hard to grab the pole. Even too much. On his last flying lap he went off the line at the first Lesmo bend, his car sled and he was absolutely great in managing to keep control with all four wheels in the gravel, well beyond the kerbs. But his try was aborted and he had to settle second, one tenth of a second behind Kox. "Race is another stuff," Giovanardi commented, "and I'm sure tomorrow I will be a pain in the ass for Kox!".
Again Nicola Larini will be third on the grid, despite his commitment. "I don't know exactly what - he said - but there's something wrong with my car. I don't have enough speed, which is all you need on this track".
Emanuele Naspetti qualified fourth at the wheel of his BMW, but failed to break the 1:54. wall. "I really thought I could do it, because we have worked a lot in order to choose an efficient aerodynamic configuration. We have reduced downforce and our car proved very fast on the straight. Indeed, in the latest year, we were never as close here to the Alfas as we are today".
Homeboy Roberto Colciago grabbed fifth time in qualifying, just 23 thousandths of a second slower than Naspetti. Quite a good result for his Audi A4 Quattro. "I'm not completely satisfied - he admitted - because I was so close to the second row and I missed for such a short gap".
Some notes about the other drivers.
Gianni Morbidelli was quite disappointed with his 6th time. "I simply wasn't able to make a good lap".
Eight on the grid, Sandro Sardelli hoped for something better, but he chose wrong gear ratios.
After he broke the gearbox in free practice, Moreno Soli hit the track only in the final five minutes of the qualifying session. "I have to thanks my mechanics, because they made a miracle, replacing the transmission in such a short time".
Polish Andrzej Dziurka lied 12th for most of the session, then slipped down to 15th when a tyre puncture sidelined him in the final minutes.
Gianluca De Lorenzi proved quick in free practice, placing fourth, but a broken wheelbearing forced him to miss most of the qualifying and banished him to ninth.
