Two times second for Tom Coronel in ETCC finale.
The final two races of the LG FIA European Touring Car Championship 2002 were held at the Portuguese circuit of Estoril. Dutchman Tom Coronel, driving a Carly Motors - Team Isert BMW, took two second places and climbed up to seventh place in the final series ranking. His teammate Duncan Huisman was pushed off in the first race but still finished in 13th place. In the second race Huisman worked his way up to fifth.
Tom Coronel started his first race from third. "Of course this is a good starting point, which results directly from the testing we did at Zandvoort and of course from the development that the Carly Motors team did during the season. In the early stages I had some problems with tyre grip. I had massive understeer in the first few laps, but later on the car went faster and faster. The brakes were perfect now. After the problems we had in Donington we sorted everything out at Zandvoort and they worked fine today. Towards the end of the race the gearbox started to leak oil so I had to keep an eye on my rear tyres. I finished the race in fourth, but later on it was announced that Rickard Rydell and Jorg Müller were penalised so I was promoted to second", Tom Coronel said.
Tom Coronel started the second race from fifth place. "Just like in the first race I had a rocket start and immediately moved from the left to the right part of the track and closed in to second place. In those early laps you must be careful not to be hit and damage your car or to be thrown out completely". At first Tom had to give in a bit, but after Giovanardi dropped out and Rydell was passed with a fine outbraking manoeuvre the Dutchman moved up to second spot which he kept until the chequered flag. "Again grip started to improve towards the end of the race and the car worked beautifully. From that moment on you can start to attack and move up. With today's results we end the season on a high, but of course we knew for some time already that we were on the right way. The only difference was that we did not always get the results. Today at Estoril we did", Coronel concluded. Tuner Carly Pellinkhof immediately declared after the race that he wants to continue in next year's ETCC and Coronel instantly agreed to share his opinion.
Tom Coronel is supported in the FIA European Touringcar Championship by Apex, Seiko, Bertelli and McGregor.
