GIOVANARDI IS GIVEN A TIME PENALTY AND KOX JUMPS INTO EURO STC LEAD

The fight for the Euro STC crown is growing harder and harder. With two meetings to go, Peter Kox has claimed the championship leadership by one point to Fabrizio Giovanardi, who got a time penalty in race-two that costed him 6 precious points. But Alfa Romeo appealed against the decision.

The Dutchman easily won race one, but then he payed, as well as Giovanardi and Larini, a risky tyre choice in race-two. That enabled Roberto Colciago to score another great win (the fourth of the year for him and his AGS Motorsport Audi) and Alfa Romeo young gun Gianluca De Lorenzi to achieve an outstanding 2nd place.

On the next sunday, at Vallelunga, Kox and Giovanardi will face each other for the last-but-one meeting of the season and, for the first time, the Honda man will not be all alone against his enemies. BTCC race winner Gabriele Tarquini will be at his side, at the wheel of a second Accord run by the JAS team.

It's a shame that Gianni Morbidelli has almost dropped out of contention, due to his accident with Colciago in race-one. Now the BMW driver is 34 points behind the leader and he's the first one to be sceptic about his chances to recover.

RACE-ONE. The track was damp, and all drivers went on wets. Colciago and Morbidelli were quick at the start, but Kox managed to maintain the lead; Giovanardi and Studenic clashed at the first corner and the Slovak's Audi stopped in the gravel trap. Kox pulled away, chased by Colciago, Giovanardi, Morbidelli, Larini and Naspetti, who was recovering from the back of the grid. On lap 2, Giovanardi overtook Colciago, who was treated by Morbidelli; the BMW man dived inside, but Colciago bumped him off in the gravel trap. The clerk of the course showed the black-and-white flag to the AGS driver, while Larini and Naspetti moved up to 3rd and 4th respectively. Kox increased his margin over the Giovanardi-Larini-Naspetti trio. Romana Bernardoni was struggling in the middle of the field, defending her 8th position from Symanzick, Roda and Gabellini. Naspetti was in trouble with weary tyres, he lost contact to Giovanardi and Naspetti and then was overtaken by Colciago and De Lorenzi. On the final lap, the latest overtook Colciago for 4th. Kox scored his 5th win of the year from the three Alfas; fighting for 7th Pigoli and Bernardoni clashed, and Gabellini inherited the position.

RACE-TWO. The weather was still variable, but this time most of the drivers went on slicks; all but Kox, Giovanardi, Larini and Roda who chose slicks on the front, wets on the rear. At the start, Kox took the lead from Giovanardi, Larini and Colciago; Gabellini spun in the gravel trap and withdrew. On lap 2, Giovanardi overtook Kox for the lead, in the same corner where Gabellini went off, but under the yellow flag. The mixed tyre choice proved wrong, Kox slipped down, Larini drove twice on the grass and Govanardi couldn't manage to keep his pursuers behind. Colciago took the lead, chased by the De Lorenzi, Morbidelli and Naspetti. Invain De Lorenzi tried to overtake Colciago, but he was successfull in keeping the BMWs behind. In the final lap, Kox lost two more positions, finishing 9th, but then he protested against Giovanardi's move and the stewards decided to give a 19-second time penalty to the Italian, pushing him down to 9th, just behind Kox. Thus, Pigoli obtained an outstanding 5th.

The Euro STC will resume next weekend at Vallelunga.
